Hi
everyone!
Did
you ever ask yourself a question: am I a leader or a follower? Have you ever
had a chance to find it out? Or maybe there’s not only one option possible?
In
high school days I wasn’t thinking about it a lot, but it changed when I went
to university. I started considering whether I’d like to be a worker my whole
life…or could I become a manager or founder of my own small business. There
were many group projects during studies, which means there were many
opportunities to test my social skills. However, every time we were finishing accomplishment,
I was feeling unsure. I was doing my part of work, and when there were any
disputes, we were resolving them easily.
It
was until one day. At first it seemed to be just another group project about
chemical engineering, but that time professor surprised us, and gave each one
of us specific function. Oddly enough I was supposed to be a leader! It was a
stressing moment for me. Actually, it was a whole stressing month. Just how
fast we started, the problems appeared. Other members had different ideas for
designed installation. The atmosphere were getting tense and I as a leader had
to resolve the conflict and make a final decision. The difficulty was that
everyone treated me as an equal. Which was right…I was just a student. Although,
I’m not very confident I knew everyone need my action. I decided to write down
every idea and make a table with pros and cons. The concept with the most cons
will win. Not everyone was content at first, but it had good long-term effects.
The conflict was solved quickly, all members felt they were treated fairly,
moreover we deduced the objectively best idea.
I
have to admit I wasn’t expecting to be a good leader. However, that wasn’t easy
for my soft heart. A leader is supposed to be assertive and caring at the same
time. He’s not supposed to be afraid if someone is mean to him. For me being a
leader is challenging. How about you?

OdpowiedzUsuńHi Suzy! You raised a very interesting topic which can be debated forever, but here’s my short take on it.
OdpowiedzUsuńRegarding questions at the beginning of the post, my personal opinion is that it’s always a mix of leadership and following for everyone. I also think that being a leader doesn’t differ much from being a usual worker (which we often consider as a follower). It’s just a regular job, sometimes with a higher degree of responsibility and creativity, but not always. Speaking of myself, I’m just a regular programmer at a company, but my job often requires setting up communication between people, arranging meetings and taking leadership in decision making. Sometimes it’s hard to take responsibility, but that’s what makes the job more interesting.
Thank you for the post, it really made me think a lot.
